Exploring the 6 Cs of Nursing through Creativity

In 2021 a bespoke hybrid creative health training model was developed by the director of www.creativehealthtraining.com for nursing students at the University of Roehampton. Focusing on the 6 Cs of nursing using drama, dance, music and art to explore care, compassion, communication, courage and commitment.

Delivered over 5 days with online presentations, in-person teambuilding workshops, self-directed small group study, and student performances; culminating with reflection and evaluation on using creative toolkits in clinical practice.

Key enablers are the CHT team of experienced creative facilitators with the University managing challenging logistics and providing engaged staff to support.

The University funds the ongoing training from multiple sources. It has proved cost effective compared with other simulated practice programmes. They value the scale of delivery, the blended learning, the interprofessional teaching, and exposing students to creative arts and arts therapies they might not experience on placement.

Benefits include:

  • Aligning with commitment in NHS 10 Year Plan to train healthcare staff in new, innovative approaches valuing creativity and flexibility.
  • Meeting requirements for simulated practice placement hours.
  • Self-care resources to help manage stress and avoid absenteeism.
  • Understanding the role of creative health in preventive care.
  • Interprofessional delivery from allied health and creative professionals.

I feel more engaged, met new people and have made many friends. Group work was lovely and bonding. This is the week I really enjoyed after the stress of placements and assignments
